History of the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli of Venice
Santa Maria dei Miracoli was erected between 1481 and 1489 on the design of Pietro Lombardo to give a worthy place to the Icon of the Virgin among the Saints, which had been venerated since 1408 for its thaumaturgical powers.
The church, which was then connected to the adjoining convent – now private homes – by a bridge, became one of the greatest examples of Venetian architectural renaissance: the polychrome marbles, the false portico along the sides, the semicircular pediment.
The interior, organized in a single nave with a barrel vault, is dominated by the staircase that leads to the main altar completely decorated with statues of Tullio Lombardo, Alessandro Vittoria and Nicolò di Pietro, while the vault is divided into fifty coffers decorated with the faces of the Prophets and Patriarchs by Gerolamo Pennacchi, Vincenzo dalle Destre and Lactantius from Rimini.
