History of the Church of San Alvise of Venice

Tradition has it that the church was built in 1388 by donation of Antonia Venier and then consecrated to Saint Louis Bishop of Toulouse – whose 15th century statue stands above the portal – after appearing in a dream to the devout young woman Venier.

Indeed, the stylistic choices typical of the late 14th century Gothic architecture of the facade support the hypothesis of legendary dating.

It was one of the most beloved churches of J. Ruskin who tried to attribute to Carpaccio the eight tempera tablets (today at the Museo Correr).

But the church is known for three important paintings by Tiepolo: two early works (1738-40), The Flagellation and Christ Crowned with Thorns, and a more mature work (after 1740), The Ascent of Christ to Calvary in which Tiepolo combines Baroque theatricality with the drama of Tintoretto, which he sometimes looks at.
