History of Actv public trasport in Venice

The first vaporetto came into operation in Venice in 1881 and was dedicated to the wife of King Umberto I, Margherita Maria Teresa Giovanna of Savoy (1851 - 1926), being launched as Regina Margherita. It was a model with steam traction (built by the French company Compagnie des bateaux Omnibus) - hence the name of the vaporetto - which appeared in the city along the Grand Canal and was followed by 8 identical boats (built in Rouen's French shipyards that they arrived in Venice by circumnavigating Italy) that carried out public transport service only along the Grand Canal until 1890, when the Venetian Lagoon company or SVL was established. This extended the service to the Venice lagoon ensuring connections with the centers of Chioggia and Torcello and with the mainland with Fusina and San Giuliano (the Ponte della Libertà for cars will be inaugurated only on 25 April 1933).

The service continued with SVL - which increased the fleet up to 23 waterbuses - until 1910 when, after a referendum citizen consultation, it was decided to found the Municipal Administration for Inland Navigation known as A.C.N.I. The company expanded with the purchase of 14 boats on January 1, 1930 so that the fleet reached a capacity of almost 12,000 passengers in 57 boats. After the opening of the Ponte della Libertà A.C.N.I. changed its name to A.C.N.I.L. (Municipal Company of Navigazione Interna Lagunare) and went expanding to the mainland with a fleet of buses; even the naval fleet grew significantly until 1978, when the company changed its name to the current ACTV, a company of the Consorzio Trasporti Veneziano.

Currently ACTV has 160 boats and a hundred floating station or pontoons.
