Press Release Venezuelan Pavilion

The 60th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia will see the participation of the Venezuelan artist Juvenal Ravelo, Master of kinetic art, participatory and social. Between April 20 and November 24, 2024, the international public who attends the important and renowned art exhibition you will be able to admire in the Venezuelan Pavilion a series of installations conceived and designed ad hoc. Entitled Participatory Experience. Juvenal Ravelo, the national project was organized by the Ministry of People's Power for Culture, edited by Dr. Edgar Ernesto González and commissioned by Reinaldo Landaeta.

Art and society

In each of the works the fragmentation of light and participatory art are integrated.
Through the latter the artist proposes actions to activate urban space through community collaboration in the construction of the work of art, a concept that Ravelo introduced in 1975 in his hometown Caripito (Monagas state, Venezuela) and which has become a reference for an aesthetic practice of great socio-cultural impact. This is how a mural invites visitors to La Biennale Arte 2024 to collectively create an ongoing work of art, using the colors that distinguish the Sustainable Development Goals.

“Ravelo, with over 70 years of experience in the art world, is a fierce and convinced defender of the culture of art in society. This artist promotes creative work that energizes the space of the city starting from the collaboration of the community that joins in the construction of a work of art” he declares González, curator of the exhibition.
Color-cesía

This project is a tribute to the Master of kinetic art who, in 1965, began his studies in sociology of art at the Sorbonne where he had the historians and researchers Pierre as professors Francastel and Jean Cassou. Ravelo, like other foreign artists, came to Paris to consolidate the his studies in an effervescent environment, full of socio-political and cultural changes. His relationship with thinkers and art theorists, such as Frank Popper, gave him the opportunity to recognize the factors that intervene, from a social point of view, in creation as a part fundamental of contemporary artistic thought. His skills and new knowledge will led him to focus his research on the experiences of visual perception, which Ravelo defines as Fragmentation of light and color.

On a two-dimensional plane, his proposal focuses on the decomposition of light, through optical illusions that occur in real time thanks to the interrelationship between color and visual appearances (called color-cesía), which reproduce the visual effects in shades that are they repeat systematically and generate optical instability.

Juvenal presents a kinetic installation in the Main Hall of the Venezuelan Pavilion and, similarly, it offers an immersive, participatory and sensorial journey in which the visitor experiments, starting from the perception of space and time, representation three-dimensional of the work.

As a contemporary artist, he takes advantage of the possibilities offered by 21st century technologies and to this end he compares digital art with each of the concepts he has in the Minor Room developed between 1965 and 2024: the double exposure effect; optical instability; the light fragmented; the chromatic activation environment; the light and color of the new millennium.

Participatory experience. Juvenal Ravelo, is an encounter with the physical experience of light and color through dynamic interactions that make art perceived not as a contemplative object but as a social and aesthetic event.
