Press Release Uzbek Pavilion

The Uzbekistan Art and Culture Development Foundation announces the participation of the Republic of Uzbekistan in the 60th International Exhibition of Art — The Venice Biennale, which will be held from 20 April to 24 November 2024. The pavilion, entitled "Don't Miss the Cue", is curated for the first time by the Center for Contemporary Art Tashkent and presents Uzbek artist Aziza Kadyri. "Don't Miss the Cue" will also see a collaboration with the Qizlar collective, a group of female artists from Tashkent (the word qizlar means girls in Uzbek).

In tune with the theme of the 60th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venice, "Stranieri Ovunque - Foreigners Everywhere", proposed by the curator Adriano Pedrosa, the exhibition “Don’t Miss the Cue” addresses questions of belonging and identity through the experiences of Central Asian women, offering insight into how they move and redefine themselves in the migratory process.

“For me personally, the collaborative aspect of the creative process is a moment key in which women's voices come together, representing various experiences — migration, transformation and resilience. Together, we reinterpret ways of interacting with the cultural and historical heritage, particularly fabrics and costumes, traditionally associated with 'female' professions, through the synthesis of art and technology as tools to explore contemporary Uzbek identity,” says artist Aziza Kadyri. The concept of the exhibition project "Don't Miss the Cue" is directly linked to the theme of the Biennale Arte 2024: upon entering the Pavilion at the Arsenale, visitors embark a metaphorical journey that involves elements of participation and interaction with the installation. The project draws visitors into the deconstructed backstage of a theatre, reminiscent of the Houses of Culture that were present in Eurasia at the beginning of the 20th century.

MAY COMMUNICATION AND EVENTS 1

The theatrical setting comes to life through sculptures created from costume sketches traditional, complemented by audiovisual materials from the Qizlar Collective artist group. The project focuses on women's stories, collective practices and complex relationships between the physical body and the surrounding world.
"It is extremely important for us to discover the topic of female identities. The meanings artistic features incorporated into the project concept are reflected in both the exhibition and the catalogue, where we try to give space to women's voices and experiences. Work together with the National Pavilion of Uzbekistan is an incredible and meaningful experience for the entire collective,” says Anastasia Sever, executive director and coordinator of the Qizlar Collective.

The exhibition also explores the interaction between technology and tradition. The characteristic Uzbek hand embroidery suzani is reinterpreted through intelligence technology artificial. Aziza Kadyri collaborated with suzani master Madina Kasimbaeva who transformed Aziza's drawings into textile art found in curtains and embroidery.

"It is a great honor for me to participate in the work on the National Pavilion of Uzbekistan. I have practiced embroidery for 25 years. During this time, more than 500 female students of embroidery have collaborated with me. I have dedicated my entire life to the concept of 'collectivity female'. Embroidery is a task that cannot be tackled alone. It requires a team and, in our case, a team of women. Even in ancient times, when every girl she embroidered her dowry, her relatives and friends helped her. The work of a master is one continuous research. Aziza Kadyri and I embody the idea of female collectivity through the embroidery. This is an extremely immersive experience, of which I am sure will captivate visitors to the pavilion," says embroiderer Madina Kasimbaeva.

The recognizable suzani motifs processed by artificial intelligence undergo a virtual transformation and embody new meanings. Not only this combination it reinterprets traditional motifs but also highlights cultural changes in the world modern. As a result, visitors can better understand the impact of technology on culture and identity passing through all the installations, reconsidering one's personal experience in the process.

The National Pavilion of Uzbekistan was presented at the Biennale for the first time Architecture 2021, and also participated in the Biennale Arte 2022 and the Biennale Architecture 2023.
