History of La Fenice Theatre

Born on the project of Gian Antonio Selva (1790) commissioned by a theatrical company that had previously been in the theater of San Benedetto flaming in 1774, the La Fenice theater was built quickly and inaugurated on May 16, 1792 with the representation of The Agrigento Games by Giovanni Paisiello. It derives its own name from the theater company that wanted it built here in Campo San Fantin.

The following century a fire hit the theater destroying it December 13, 1836 but thanks to the mastery of the brothers Tommaso and Giambattista Meduna La Fenice was rebuilt the same as before.

The nineteenth century saw the theater protagonist of the world scene for what concerns the lyric by hosting numerous first representations of Gioachino Rossini (Tancredi, 1813; Semiramide, 1823), Vincenzo Bellini (I Capuleti ei Montecchi, 1830; Beatrice di Tenda, 1833) and Giuseppe Verdi (Ernani, 1843; Attila, 1846; Rigoletto, 1851; La traviata, 1853; Simon Boccanegra, 1857).

The First World War brought about the closure of the Teatro La Fenice but at the end of the conflict the opening was marked by an intense attendance of the best singing talents and the best conductors at the time.

In 1930 the Venice Biennale inaugurated the First International Festival of Contemporary Music which brought to the lagoon to collaborate with the Fenice artists such as Stravinsky, Britten, Berio, Nono and Bussotti.

In 1936 the architect Miozzi, formerly designer of the Ponte degli Scalzi near the station and of a sensitive modification to the Accademia Bridge, took charge of a restoration of the theater.

On 29 January 1996 an arson attack attributed to an electrician (to whom we will not be pleased to mention the name) who wanted to avoid contractual penalties completely destroyed the interior and the roof of the Phoenix causing commotion among the population and throughout the world. In eight years the theater was brought back to its former state thanks to the work of the best artisans available at the time for a cost of about 70 million euros. On December 14th 2003 the La Fenice Theater was inaugurated in the presence of the President of the Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi with a concert directed by Riccardo Muti.

The restoration obviously gave rise to many polemics between traditionalists and modernists who asked instead to dare and abandon the past for a modern construction in step with our era. Needless to say, they lost.

Since 2004 at the Fenice there is the annual New Year concert in open competition with the most traditional Viennese concert.
