The Church of San Giacomo dall'Orio is located in Campo Giacomo dall'Orio, inside the Sestiere di Santa Croce.

Architectural description of the Church of San Giacomo dall'Orio

The curious name of this ancient church - from the Orio - is derived from the transformation of the word "laurel", a laurel tree therefore that probably stood near the church.

The exterior still retains characteristics of the original foundation, in addition to the square-shaped bell tower, a typical 12th-13th century Venetian-Byzantine construction. The Latin-cross interior with three naves still retains the beautiful ship's hull ceiling.

But San Giacomo da l'Orio above all is among the churches with the greatest number of works of the full Venetian Renaissance: Episodes of the life of Jesus by Andrea Schiavone, Allegory of faith and The Doctors of the Faith by Veronese (new sacristy), The San Sebastiano which is among the most successful works by Marescalco, The Flagellation of Tizianello (Titian's great-grandson) and numerous paintings by Jacopo Palma il Giovane.

This was also one of the favorite churches of the great British writer, painter, poet and art critic John Ruskin.
