Carnival Venice Venice Carnival - Venice Italy

Masks and headpieces of Carnival on "Clara, Il rinoceronte" (Pietro Longhi, 1751)

Event from February 16th to March 5th 2019

The Venice Carnival is one of the most felt and experienced parties both by the Venetians and by the many visitors who arrive every year in the city from all over the world. It lasts 18 days and ends with the classic fat days, the culmination of the Venice Carnival.

The program includes performances in Piazza San Marco, in the major theaters of the city, in the Venetian camps that offer different proposals and in the port suburbs that organizes night parties for the youngest. Even the mainland with Mestre, Marghera, and all neighboring countries, offer a rich program of events with shows and concerts.

Main events of the Venice Carnival

- The Venetian Festival on water: the Festa sul Rio in Cannaregio between the Ponte dei Tre Archi and the Ponte delle Guglie is held for the first day of Carnival. Here, on numerous boats decorated with feast enlivened by acrobats and accompanied by music, an evocative representation takes place that attracts thousands of people on the banks of the Canaregio Canal. It is recommended to arrive early and give up if you are late to avoid being bottled in the streets that lead to the Rio di Canaregio.

- Carnival opening regatta: the day after the morning the traditional regatta that opens the Carnival takes place. At 11.00 a procession of festively decorated boats starts from Punta della Dogana passing through the Grand Canal to reach the Guglie and the Tre Archi Bridge in Canaregio. At the arrival of the boat procession, the food and wine stands open and the party begins on the banks. The products of Venetian tradition are offered to the public: fritole, galani, cicheti veneziani.

- Corteo and Festa delle Marie: one week after the opening of the Carnival one of the most famous events takes place: the Festa delle Marie. A procession in historical costumes starts at San Pietro di Castello at 2.30 pm and reaches Via Garibaldi, Riva degli Schiavoni and Piazza San Marco where the Marie take to the stage for the presentation to the public. The Marie are 12 girls chosen among the towns to remember the tribute that the doge gave to 12 beautiful Venetian girls of humble conditions giving them a dowry for their wedding. In addition to the historical parade the event includes a real beauty contest with the proclamation of the most beautiful Maria at the end of the Venice Carnival.

- Volo dell'Angelo: the Sunday after the Festa delle Marie takes place in Piazza San Marco a classic of the Venice Carnival: the Flight of the Angel. Preceded by a procession of masks with the doge in mind the event sees a figure descend from the 100 meters of the Campanile di San Marco to the stage placed in Piazza between the Procuratie, in front of the entrance of Correr. Over the years the protagonist of the Flight of the Angel has seen soubrette and famous sporting alternating in the descent; for some years it has been the Maria winner of the previous year to become an Angel for a day. The event officially opens the Carnival celebrations.

- The most beautiful mask competition: immediately after the Angel Flight, which officially opens the stage of the Carnival, they begin to parade the masks in Piazza San Marco. The competition is open to all those who want to parade in masks and is the public in the square to decree, with direct elimination, the winners of each day. The event includes two daily competitions, in the mornings and afternoons. Subscriptions on the net.

- The flight of the eagle: on Sundays before Shrove Tuesday there has been another fad for years, the Flight of L'Aquila in Piazza San Marco. The event starts at 11.00 and sees the protagonist of a character from the show or the company descend from the bell tower to the stage where they follow celebrations and masked parades.

Where to buy a Venetian mask

Apart from the shops of artisan masks scattered throughout the city - taking care to avoid the false Venetian masks not made by hand - the Venice Carnival organizes a Venetian Mask Market in Campo Santo Stefano from 23 February to 5 March 2019 and from 8.00 to 17.00.

Where to park at the arrival of the Venice Carnival

We advise against arriving by car and parking at Piazzale Roma, better the Tronchetto with its great availability or also the parking in Terraferma in Mestre.

Go to the History of Venice Carnival

The term derives from the Latin phrases carnem levare or carnem levamen that means "take off the meat", with reference to fat tuesday as the last possible day to have a Lucullian lunche before the usual food deprivations during the period of Lent. A festival therefore linked to Christian and Catholic worship seems, even if it is almost certain that tradition goes back to the Greek and Roman period and has been absorbed - like so many other social and political aspects of the ancient world - by the later Christian society.
